Research Interests
I am a Principal Researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan. My research integrates population ecology, mathematical modelling, and decision science to understand population dynamics and support biodiversity conservation under environmental variability and uncertainty.
A major focus of my recent work is the development and application of matrix population models. I introduced interstage flow matrices to quantify realised movements of individuals among life-history stages and reveal demographic processes that cannot be detected from population growth rates alone. I am also developing life table response experiment (LTRE) methods that integrate analyses of population growth with interstage flows, allowing the demographic effects of environmental variation to be examined in greater detail.
During my visit to the SalGo Team, I am working with Professor Rob Salguero-Gómez to develop an integrated framework for assessing how environmental change affects population resilience using matrix population models. My broader research applies population models and decision-theoretic approaches to threatened-species conservation, invasive-species management, ecological risk assessment, and ecosystem management under uncertainty.
